40 Days of public solitude
PreviousNext
40 days, 40 people, 40 experiences. One glass box.
I am interested in how space and environment influence the way we act and behave. The idea of isolation is sometimes something we crave for in a hectic ‘Big Brother’, ‘Facebook’ society. Using this idea as a point of departure, I intended to contradict the concept of being on display by creating my own escape – a retreat – through a sculptural intervention. Gradually building a protective cocoon for myself, I slowly obscured myself from the viewer’s perspective. I wanted to approach this situation as a further challenge for myself, by using it as an artistic sanctuary where I had the chance to create and produce art - something I have found challenging since graduating from university last year. My nest was a temporary dwelling where I had the artistic freedom (through my isolation) to respond to the environment, experience and the material given to me.
