Mary-Beth Whittingstall

Mary-Beth Whittingstall was born in 1986 and currently lives, studies and works in Manchester. As a short story writer, her work focuses on observations of the urban environment, often with an underlying fantastical theme.

However, a passion for nature, particularly entomology, is evident in her photography, which is ever-concerned with the beauty of the insect world, and important in evoking personal childhood memories of life in a less structured environment.

These images not only depict the exquisiteness of insects and their curious mechanical-like bodies, but also somehow anthropomorphise those creatures often misunderstood and underappreciated in our world – showing the insects as what they truly are; natural, living machines, a juxtaposition in itself.

Mary-Beth is currently working on a collection of new fairy tales and fables for children (and ‘grown ups’ too), collaborating with illustrator Paul Simm, also a member of Urbis Creatives.
