Joanna Chomeniuk

I am a Environmental Psychologist interested in Social Art projects. I graduated (MA) in 2006 from Gdansk University in Poland.
My latest project is called The Language Sofa. It is a new socio – educational approach focusing on language and communication skills. It works on a ‘meet up’/ drop in group basis. It brings together people who are passionate about speaking in different languages, who want to share their skills and brush up their foreign communication abilities. The Language Sofa gives you an opportunity to practice what you have learned during a language course or on holiday. The group of Native Speakers involved in the Language Sofa is expanding thanks to the very friendly and relaxed atmosphere of the ‘meet ups’ which it hosts. So far we’ve been speaking English, Polish, Castilian Spanish, Mexican Spanish, Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi.
You will find the Language Sofa at Urbis.

The socio – art projects have focused on community groups and their relationship to the area they live in. The most important of these is a socio – educational initiative entitled “Emotional routes of Gdynia” developed and coordinated by Joanna Chomeniuk and Basia Marchwicka. It documents different aspects of identity and transition in the culture and landscape of the city of Gdynia over the last 50-60 years. It focuses on a specific social mission concerned with building and developing relationships between people and the space they live in. The citizens involved in the project represent different generations and backgrounds and have different ideas and needs. This socio- architectural, multidisciplinary and multi-generation project gave rise to an exhibition called THE EMOTIONAL ROUTES OF GDYNIA*, which was held in the hall of the University of the Third Age in Gdynia, Poland in June, 2008.
